Comparing the DPM residency to the pressure of an MD residency is akin to comparing the pitching mechanics problems of a 6 year old with a major league ball player.
Suicide in podiatry residents ? Of course it’s a problem. Why you ask ?
- The resident realizes that they spend 3 years cutting toenails for the residency director.
- The resident spends their time doing surgery which is generally not necessary.
- The resident sees that in podiatry, delusions of grandeur are rewarded with lecturing engagements.
- The resident sees their residency director selling equinus braces and lengthening calf muscles on anyone walking.
- The resident looks at the APMA leadership and realizes that idiocy and ignorance are hailed as leadership.
- The resident looks at the ads in PM magazine and becomes depressed over their future.
- The resident rotates in a real hospital (sometimes) and sees real doctors treating real diseases in patients who actually require real care.
- The resident comes to understand that orthopedic surgeons, dermatologists, cardiologists, vascular surgeons, rheumatologists, physical therapists, PA’s, NP’s, can do everything the DPM can do and more.
- The resident realizes that with fraud and abuse, they are doomed to paying off their student loans for a lifetime.
- They realize they are not considered real doctors and were suckered.
Thinking about it, I’d kill myself too.

Seth sums it up well. Lecturing in the UK or Australia about the magic potential of plastic shoe inserts isn’t relevant in the world of real medicine. Watching and maybe assisting on a lower leg procedure doesn’t apply to a wtf license in many states and WILL NEVER BE USED. People don’t ‘choose’ podiatry’, it chooses YOU. C in Ochem, DPM=didn’t pass MCAT, DPM=doesn’t practice medicine, a clown from East West State College in Buttchuck, fd around in university, majoring in bullsht, then all of a sudden, they “develop” a foot “problem” and see a DP WTF.
