You are what you are. A podiatrist. You need not feel ashamed in the presence of an M.D. Why ? You are a limited license health care provider. You are not a real doctor (physician). If you accept that you are, why be ashamed ? Podiatry will never be equal to an M.D. because you are not an M.D. Simple really. A dentist is a dentist. A chiropractor a chiropractor. A pharmacist a pharmacist. And so on. What is embarrassing and a reason for shame is the sad level of crime and quackery to which many podiatrists ascribe and function. But, if you accept the fact that you may generate income by less than admirable and ethical means (because you cannot make money cutting toenails and being what a podiatrist basically does) you can function as a D.P.M. I believe podiatry, with the help of the APMA, has done an exceptional job of advancing the profession.Podiatry has created a false science of unproven scams ranging from biomechquactics to the need for unneeded surgeries to the need for expensive wound care products. Podiatry has created phony certifications to verify that your quackery and theft are OK and standard of podiatry practice. And there is of course the Bible of quackery and theft, the PM News attestations that all is well in the fantasy land of podiatry. In podiatry you should count your blessings and money. And accept the fact you are not and will never be a real doctor. You are a podiatrist.
Got some good news. I just got off the phone with a podiatrist who did a 3 year program and was happy with the profession podiatry and told me he did a lot of cases.
My conclusion is not eveyone is unhappy with practicing podiatry.
Realty has not hit him yet, ask him in two years, right before he files for bankruptcy. Its not about how many cases he did as a resident, its about what is he going to get paid for doing the surgery, the answer , very little.
You CAN’T MAKE A LIVING IN PODIATRY DOING ONLY SURGERY! Most MD’s do more surgery in 2 days than a podiatrist does all week and the pod surgery is relatively minor, mostly ELECTIVE, and will likely be questioned and challenged by the payer.
First, How long has he been out? Newbies haven’t recognized the BOREDOM of just feet and a limited license. Second, yes there are some podiatrists happy where they are. They’re suited for limited work because they intrinsically can’t see why the WHOLE PICTURE IS IMPORTANT. Podiatry is a wonderful profession.
For example, think of the relief that a patient has when a podiatrist is able to treat a painful ingrown toenail. Just knowing that a patient is helped makes a podiatrist smile and understand that they helped to treat a patient suffering from foot pain. This is a sense of accomplishment, which is helping our patients.
A P.A. can do an ingrown toenail dummy. Anyone can with just a days training not 7 years. It’s hard to have a smile on your face when you know you’ve “been had”. Ignorance is bliss and many lifers walk around with smiles on their face. You make the inference.

As a 4th year Podiatry Student ( I wont say Podiatric medical student because that is wrong) Reality sets in during my hospital rotation, The PAs, the med students, some nurses still in 2023 questioning what the F is a Podiatrist doing in the hospital.
