Oh and one more thought. They say 50% of podiatry is skin and nail problems. So why not just get a PA degree and skip the time and money and stress of getting a DPM degree ? Think about itA PA can do everything that an office based podiatrist can do. Everything ! Diagnose and treat skin and nail problems. Diagnose and treat sprains, strains, and fractures. Plantar fasciitis. Orthotics. Injections. Everything but hospital based surgery. With the declining poor reimbursement for surgery, who needs it ? Your ego ? Let others do the surgery. Who cares.And as a PA you can expand your scope of practice. Yep. Knees. Hips. Shoulders. Backs. Diabetes. Hyperuricemia. And do not forget reality. Real physicians have more respect for a PA than a podiatrist.
The only conclusion is to forget being a podiatrist. Be a PA and skip the limited license DPM. You can do it all other than “bone surgery”. Make the same money or more. Be closer to being a physician. Have more respect.
Or you can join the DPM parade and pay for others to take free trips while you struggle to make a living. The continuing decline in applicants to podiatry schools tells you that at least some people can smell the feces. And prefer not to step in it………………….

If I were a potential student I would worry about spending all that tuition money, and not being able to get a license to practice because of a residency shortage.
I applied 3 times. Got denied after 30 years experience and being board certified by abpm.

I heard today was match day for many physicians. Many got matches. However there were 2 older experienced physicians that did not get matched. One of them I met and they are more than qualified and experienced, published many articles, yet they are not as young as the recent graduates. My guess is if one does not get matched their chances of getting matched go down.
