Dear Podiatry Post Readers,
I was astonished to read a few months ago in PM News that Dr. Bret Ribotsky made a commentabout some lecturers at podiatric meetings not being licensed to practice. This upset Dr. Ribotsky, as he NOW FEELS that all lecturers should have an active license to practice podiatry, medicine or whatever theirhealthcare speciality is.
I gave this some deep thought. I said to myself for Dr. Ribotsky to suddenly be concerned about the ethics of speakers atpodiatric meetings is a clear case of the pot calling the kettle black.I know that Dr. Ribotsky use to be incharge of the annual DermFoot meeting. I do not believe he still is.However, when Dr. Ribotsky ran DermFoot he featured a unlicensed professional to lecture every single year.This unlicensed professional is a self claimed skin guru from the state of Washington. He also founded some kind offoot and ankle foundation that has traveling podiatry meetings.
I do know from speaking with numerous colleagues over the years who practice in and around the Seattle, Washington areathe background of this unlicensed professional. This unlicensed professional pled guilty to child molestation and lost his license about 15 years ago.The child was his own daughter who worked for him in the office. He changed his first name from Gary (I will not mention his last name) toa new first name (which I also will not mention). The reason this unlicensed professional did this was to avoid any connection with his past.I can go on and on with much more intimate details, but I chose not to. This man’s history bothers me terribly.
This unlicensed professional remains on the podiatry circuit, all the time.
I can no longer even understand Dr. Bret Ribotsky’s reasoning for the things he writes in PM News.And the editor never censors anything he writes. No question in my mind, Dr. Ribotsky is in Dr. Barry Block’s inner circle.
Just a few months ago Dr. Ribotsky told all of us that he “is a cheerleader for the profession of podiatry”. Really !But if you can all remember, when Dr. Ribotsky had bilateral calcaneal fractures from a boating accident(push came to shove) and he chose an orthopedic surgeon over a podiatric surgeon to perform his surgery.
But if he needed revision surgery, he told us “he would go to Dr. Stanley Kallish”. Sure he would have ………

LimFlow is a procedure performed only by vascular surgeons or interventional cardiologists. Podiatrists role is referral of patients only. No DPM can or will ever do the procedure. Arterialization of a vein is not something Dr. Lepow will ever ever do. He might provide wound care after the procedure, or do a distal forefoot amputation. That is all. It is not surprising that Dr. Lepow would imply credit for something they did not do. Look at their family history in the Houston area and draw your own conclusions.
Thanks for the clarification and affirmation about the ‘vein procedure’ Hallux Guy. I thought it suspect that a NON MD would be allowed to do something like that. Again, most states FORBID NON MD’s to even touch the ankle, let alone the leg, and what would a wtf do if they sent a phlebolith or plaque flying as a result of their manipulation? By what I feel is a horrible clean up bill regarding scope of practice to allow ABPM board certified podiatrists treat melanoma in situ, squamous cell carcinoma on the ankle.,
And mandating every state accept license reciprocity for older podiatrists lacking podiatric residency training.

No matter what the lifers say, what the Pod colleges promote or what the APMA puts out in advertising, the fact that very few are applying to Pod school shows that it is all done. The realization that 7 years of Pod training does not translate into a good income.

Becoming a member and agreeing that they are helpful and care about my interests are 2 seperate actions. My opinion is that the APMA has not cared about my main interests as a podiatrist. So many “big” podiatrists started by learning from M.D.’s in the MILITARY. Pod school and pod programs seem to pale compared to the military programs…and, what’s the reason pods have to ‘LEARN DERMATOLOGY ON THEIR OWN”. Even Mr. Chaskin says this.
Why is podiatry such a DIY trade?
Podiatry is a profession. The practice of podiatry includes continuing learning. This is why my opinion go out find an MDs to teach about how pedal symptoms have underlying causes, learn about ekgs, etc….
Learn from more than one physician, textbooks etc…. There is nothing wrong with improving ones base of medical knowledge to better understand pedal pathology after one graduates this is when one improves their knowledge base.
MR. skin: So, should we get a rebate (or sue for fraud) from our quack college for not teaching us and making us learn on our own? Why do you say go to an MD. All your APMA buddies that you support with your dues say “the MD doesn’t know anything about the foot”. It’s the dpm’s that should correct the problems.
