Reading the student/resident site, the insight reflected in some commentaries is remarkable. Some correctly note that surgery in private practice does not pay well. Some note the high patient dissatisfaction rate with elective foot surgery. Some note that working for RVUs as an employed podiatrist is the most effective manner to engage in a profitable surgery practice. Some correctly conclude that office based podiatry pays as well or better than a private practice surgery based practice. Some accurately comment on the need to sell office dispense products to maintain office profitability. Some have observed the beneficial employment opportunities of those completing a fellowship. Some in fact, many accept the more than a nurse/pharmacist/PA but less that a real doctor income associated with the MD/DO degree as well as the far more limited employment opportunities for a DPM. Most understand employment by a private practice podiatrist or podiatry group practice is fraught with abuse and potential complications and ultimately disappointment. Most realize that diabetes, toenails, ulcers, amputations are more likely to be a major part of their practice than ankle or triples. Demonstrating such insight, makes me wonder how these seemingly intelligent individuals were suckered into the world of podiatry to begin with.
Davey Weiss is worried about his business. Though he says it’s mean ‘ol Dr. Scholl that’s causing problems he really means patients can get relief from NON DPM treatments. There is NO comparison of MD programs/DO Programs/PA programs to Podiatry schools. There are NO rotations in Ob-gyn/Peds/IM?Psych/Surgery at the Podiatry Schools. SO how can DPMs state that the education is the same. As of late, more Podiatry schools have less and less hospital rotation’s and then you have the low enrolment rate. Things are not looking well for Podiatry Land.
Why waste hospital experience to a non MD foot tech who will NEVER USE OR NEED SYSTEMIC EXPERIENCE. There are P.A.’S who seriously treat those things and need to be trained. Podiatry has no business taking up precious space.

Remember the smile on the patients face after you treated them. Be happy and proud of helping others. A podiatrist can attempt to get a second job or income source to support a practice that is not financially solvent. A second job can also provide a source of income to qualify for membership in the APMA and state society to pay for dues.

Podiatrists have the option to apply and go to medical school to get licensed to treat the whole body. Remember, one needs to be a podiatrist or podiatry student to qualify for the opportunity to pay dues money to be able to join the APMA and state society.
