So there was a line in PM News today about COVID toes. In fact every time I read something Podiatry related I hear about COVID toes. You know when I do not hear anything about COVID toes? When I read anything about the Coronavirus that is written for the general public. People want to hear about the symptoms that will kill you. COVID toes will not. Podiatrists are not going to get any extra patients cause of COVID toes. I hate to be King of the Obvious but patients who think they have the Coronavirus are going to an urgent care or emergency room. They are not dialing 555-FOOT.
COVID toes are not going to save Podiatry practices. They are not going to be the lead story in the USA Today and gather Podiatrists from all over millions of patients. Do you know what people want to hear from their Podiatrists? Hey, my ingrown toenail hurts, when can you take care of it. During quarantine I decided I want to have bunion surgery. You want to save your Podiatry practice find the patients that decided they want bunion surgery over lockdown, the patients that want custom orthotics for their Plantar Fasciitis they developed over quarantine. Podiatry will save Podiatry, not COVID toes.

The statistics on COVID-19 deaths are completely skewed because docs are being told to label everything COVID-19 related. There’s much worse crimes committed, at this time. Podiatry has always tried to be relevant. Time has now come that Podiatry is not relevant in the new era of healthcare with full licensed health care providers, MD, DO, PA, NP, DC, DPT. With barely enough applicants to fill the 9 Pod schools, and three year residency trained DPMs looking for jobs…what more needs to be said about…relevance. AND no, wound care will not save Podiatry.
Alan, the key is “try.” Was it a “try” because the field was grounded in integrity and rigor? Or “try” for a salesmanship /marketing con? We all know what the real deal was.
