Dear 3rd year : A REAL doctor is an MD or DO. Chiropractors, Optometrists and Podiatrists ARE NOT DOCTORS. They are ALLIED HEALTH providers with a “doctorate”. Podiatry residency programs ARE NOT ACTUAL RESIDENCIES. They DO NOT FALL under ACGME criteria. Essentially, they are “preceptorships”, and unlike MD/DO RESIDENCIES, would not exist if it were not for the ECONOMIC benefit (economic not medical) to the hospital fund. Actually, there are diabetic foot ulcers treated by podiatrists. So any treatment to improve such an ulcer may be interpreted by a state board of podiatry as being in scope to treat a foot condition.
Thus take any drug, so long as that drug is being used to treat a foot condition, a state podiatry board has the discretion to interpret of such a treatment is within scope.
This is not true in states where podiatrists may be defined as podiatric physicians and there is no state board of podiatry. It all depends on what state one is licensed in.
