A PGA golf professional had to withdraw from the U.S. Open because of an infected soft corn. In the NBA finals, a star player for the Boston Celtics, apparently suffered a partial tear of the flexor retinaculum with subluxation of the posterior tibial tendon. What do they have in common? They were both foot injuries? Nope. What they have in common is that both athlete/patients are being treated by orthopedic surgeons. No podiatrist was called to treat these professional athletes. What is wrong with these professional teams? Don’t they know that we have specially trained experts in sports medicine? We see their faces in PM News all the time. They always claim unbelievable expertise in sports medicine. Why were they not called in to treat these star athletes? Can someone answer please. We at The Podiatry Post find this very confusing.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer today, the world famous Rothman Institute has ended its relationship with the Philadelphia Eagles football team because of the associated malpractice risk. Actually, it is because the football team wishes to have Amol Saxena care for the team, possibly assisted by Patrick DeHeer. Good move by the Eagles. Amol will be given privileges for band aid application, toe nail cutting up to 2 mm, use of foam toe separators, and casting for orthotics ( with orthopedic approval ).
Old age and health considerations cause me to request that others continue to pick up the gauntlet of TRUTH and expose podiatry for the lies and misrepresentation that have become part of its DNA. I’ll go as long as I can but I worry about how long that will be. Professional teams, only allow DPMs to make orthotics. Why? Because the insurance policies that pro teams carry state that an MD must be the primary treating physician.

There is nothing interesting about this. Professional athletes and professional teams in all sports would ONLY USE podiatry for custom orthotics. Orthopedic surgeons have always been on the front line.
I love when the adjective “custom” is put in front of orthotics. That adds a couple of hundred dollars to the plastic. I read Kevin Kirby’s Mc Quactic arch support theories. A pad here, a 2 degree tilt there (yeah, try to truly measure 2 degrees). It’s sales rhetoric because a good off the shelf support does nearly everything of significance that a “custom” support does.
