I would imagine most Podiatrists are watching the Coronavirus coverage of a possible Pandemic basically thinking who cares! It is not going to affect me. Yes, it is true that a Pandemic with the Coronavirus will not affect Podiatrists. Podiatrists do not treat respiratory illnesses (well most of them don’t, who knows with the AAPPM). Additionally, as of right now there appears to be no pedal manifestations caused but eh Coronavirus. But what would happen in a Pandemic???
Well, a Pandemic would stretch health care resources in this country. Medicare and private providers would have an immense amount of liability in such a scenario. Large portions of their resources not currently directed to Flu and other related supports will have to be siphoned there. Where would that money come from? Would they raise taxes or increase premiums? Well, if there is a Pandemic it also probably coincides with a recession, so those options are probably not realistic.
The money is most likely going to be siphoned from things like Bunion surgery, ingrown toenails, chiropractic care and the like. A Pandemic could mean a massive decrease in reimbursements for Podiatrists. Listen you can pretend that I am just crying in the wilderness but this is a very real scenario assuming a Pandemic were to occur. One further point about a Pandemic, if there is such a Pandemic people will reduce their travel to and from places. You don’t think trips to the Podiatrist might be reduced???? The Coronavirus might have no changes to Podiatrists but it never hurts to be prepared.
