So a lot of Podiatrists and medical providers have been seeing an increased case load in Plantar Fasciitis. The question to ask: is the increase in Plantar Fasciitis real? Now no numbers have been produced about actual Plantar Fasciitis numbers during the COVID 19 Pandemic. However, there are some findings which would seem to indicate that yes Plantar Fasciitis did increase due to the COVID 19 Pandemic.
The number one and most obvious cause is that people gained weight during the Pandemic. A recent study reported that the average American gained about 42% undesired weight during the Pandemic with an average weight gain of 29 lbs and 41 lbs for Milennials as can be seen in the study here:

As you may know Plantar Fasciitis increases as people’s waist lines increase. This would result in an increased rate of Plantar Fasciitis. Here is a quality study that goes over the changes that occur in the Plantar Fasciitis due to obesity and being overweight.

Needless to say if people gained weight due to the Pandemic this would lead to a large increase in Plantar Fasciitis. So the connection between increased obesity causing Plantar Fasciitis is clear. It seems that a natural cause of the Pandemic would be increases in Plantar Fasciitis.
A separate issue that has been caused by the COVID 19 Pandemic is people being inactive. As most people know one can develop Plantar Fasciitis due to inflexibility brought about by inactivity. Basically the less active you are the tighter the Plantar Fascia becomes causing Plantar Fasciitis. And well the COVID 19 Pandemic causes a lot of people to be Sedentary.
The evidence that Plantar Fasciitis has been increased and elevated by the COVID 19 Pandemic is undeniable at this time and should be taken seriously by clinicians.
