New question, how do most podiatrists work up pedal edema? Do they take a history and physical? Do they order a complete metabolic panel including renal function tests, liver function tests, ekg, echocardiogram? What about pulmonary function tests to determine if pulmonary hypertension, that might have led to cardiac failure resulting in pedal edema? I am assuming that most podiatrists are aware of all this. Podiatrust, to name a few-good one. Portal HTN was missed by a pod treating LE edema c Unna Boot. Pt had ESLD, there was pleural effusion, ascites, jaundice, and telangiectasis on torso…what a mess. Months passed until pt needed liver transplant, too late for TIPS procedure. It’d be a real stretch to believe the foot isn’t part of the body which most pods don’t consider. Opinions: Limited licenses are political and their scope depends upon the state one practices in which I believe again is political. A license is the key to entering a path to acquire training and experience to upgrade ones skill set. A license is not the key to ENTER training. Training in real professions begins the first day of PROFESSIONAL school. Post school practical training is predicated on a SOUND foundation. Mr Chasskins-podiatrists do NOT complete residencies. The AMA nor the ACGME recognize “podiatry residencies”. It is called: podiatry training apprenticeships. If one starts do medical work ups that would likely be out of scope because that’s for doctors, not podiatrists.
