ACFAS apparently has a newsletter they send to members. A friend sent me a copy of the latest newsletter.
In the newsletter, they state that the AMA rejected the notion that D.P.M.’s be allowed to take the USMLE. Well, that’s better than the APMA and Barry Block did. Good start.
ACFAS points out that the decision was made without consulting the podiatry representatives to the APMA. They state that they were surprised. Well, not so good from a mutual respect point is it. They say actions speak louder than words. Can you imagine the lack of awe and respect for the APMA “white paper” representatives. I was.
Here is the best part. ACFAS feels that perhaps the decision made was based upon a lack of understanding of the education of today’s “podiatric physician”. You know, the same AMA that wishes (with good reason) to restrict the term physician to M.D. or D.O. That AMA.
Perhaps the contrary is true. Perhaps the decision was made because THEY DO understand the education of a D.P.M. After all, they did speak with Ira Krause and Jeff DiSantis, courtesy of the APMA. Or they have been reading PM News. Or attended a podiatry seminar.

The AMA did you a favor. If you DID take the USMLE there would be evidence that podiatrists are a clear and present danger to public health.
