The ACGME Debate Continues in PM News
The ACGME debate rages on. However, the predicate is wrong ! ACGME did not unilaterally approach the APMA. The ACGME did not express an interest in the evaluation and certification of podiatry residencies. It was never the goal of ACGME to bring the DPM degree into equality or potential equality to an MD degree. Allegedly it was Lee Rogers, Larry Harkless, and Patrick DeHeer who approached ACGME with their proposition intended to bring pseudo-credibility to the Lee Rogers led ABPM.They did so with no APMA authority. This is also very similar to the idiocy of allegedly Jeffrey DeSantis and John Steinberg who without APMA authority, attempted to have podiatrists take the USMLE. Remember that USMLE white paper ?
It appears from the responses in PM News, podiatry’s version of the National Enquirer, that podiatrists either do not understand their positioning within medicine, or wish to continue with the fantasy that the medical education of a DPM, is oh so close to that of an MD. PM News continues to perpetuate these myths, publishing the wishful thinking of delusional, (want to be) real doctors.
MD’s generally accept podiatrists for what they are, as summarized in their position letter regarding the unauthorized request of DPM’s to take the USMLE. Remember again, that USMLE white paper ! They recognize and acknowledge the contributions and capabilities of a DPM to manage foot and sometimes (still controversial in some places) ankle problems. MD’s are clear: this is what you do, no more and no less (although many in the AOFAS would like to see less).
The education of a podiatrist is in no way, shape, or form equivalent to that of an MD. They know this. But apparently the PM News readership do not choose to realize this. Whether motivated by stupidity, ignorance, arrogance, or fraud, it appears there will remain a population of misfit toys in podiatry to whom PM News caters. The limited ability of the DPM degree is reflected by the articles and ads for arch supports, orthotics, lasers, creams, miracle cures for simple problems and David Alper’schildish shoe photos. MD’s see this, which only serves to reaffirm their well founded opinions of the DPM degree.

Why is there never discussion of the role of the actual people who voluntarily sign up as the willing naive dupes who actually perform podiatry on behalf of podo politicians?

American Healthcare is a corporate ladder. Sure MDs are suits, but not all suits fit when it comes to maneuvering the ladders rungs. Young docs are chasing big loan collectors and loss of aitonomy. They feed off each othe akin to how podiatry eats its youg. Unless you’re in a top level surgical specialty, you’re another bitch scraping for crumbs – private practice is toast.
