ABFAS certification :
ABFAS holds itself out to maintain a credible certification and recertification entity. In fact, the entire surgical certification process in podiatry is a laughingstock. Funny that is, if representations to the public are not taken seriously. Recently, ABFAS ( note the absence of the word podiatry or orthopedic surgery ) announced reducing the number of multiple choice questions in their LEAD program to 20 questions per session. But what is REALITY ? In REALITY, there is no security associated with the recertification process. Throughout this country, residents are taking the test for the “certified” podiatrists. This is an absolute fact. The residents are answering questions in areas of rear foot and ankle surgery and trauma that these podiatrists could NEVER answer. Surgeries these attendings NEVER perform, conditions they NEVER see or think about. Alternatively, several practitioners sit in front of the unsecured computer to access the LEAD program and take the test together. In addition, because there are a limited number of questions, the questions and answers are now known by those helping others to pass the test. It is forefoot surgeons pretending to be what they are not. Minnows pretending to be whales. Meanwhile, residents, who qualify for ABFAS, must do so in secured testing facilities. Why ? Why are residents not trusted but once qualified they may cheat ( that is what it is ) in recertification testing. The entire process is typical of podiatry, smoke and mirrors. Residency directors should inform their indentured servants that taking or assisting in these tests for an attending is unethical and unacceptable. Residents and podiatrists engaged in these behaviors should be prohibited from being certified, or their certifications withdrawn. Or other suitable discipline, for example, having to completely decertify. ABPM certification is a joke. So too is recertification by ABFAS. These unethical behaviors are WIDESPREAD. These behaviors endorse the acceptance of unethical behavior to residents. Then again, it prepares them for the reality of their future practice.
Where can I get a “meritorious” plastic plaque signifying nothing?
First you have to pay the APMA. Next write articles about shoes, socks, and orthotics and Thank PM News for it’s great service….then be insecure and desperate enough to accept it.

How to make a Pod hamburger and sell it as steak. Take one low GPA person, add some chiropody level skills, mix in white lab coats and green scrubs, one stethoscope, courses that resemble a med school curriculum but are not close, rotations that involve no medical care but plenty of nip and chip, slow barbeque for 4 years. Remove from Pod oven and then dress with a 3 year make believe residency, Decorate with 14 different board certifications or pod organizations.
