Pseudo-Physician Self-Deception Syndrome ( PPSD Syndrome )
The recent expression of righteous indignation in PM News regarding Horizon pharmaceuticals are manifestations of PPSD syndrome. PPSD is a form of mental illness. The DSM-5 diagnostic criteria include at least 5 of the following signs/symptoms:
1. Graduation from a podiatry school.
2. Constant verbalization of the phrase “I graduated medical school” or the phrase “I am a foot and ankle surgeon”.
3. Dysphoria that PM magazine is a source of accurate information.
4. Wearing of jackets or other clothing with the initials Dr. preceding their name.
5. Obsessive use of lasers, diagnostic ultrasound, Medicare DME forms.
6. Hoarding of useless “specialty certificates” representing nothing.
7. Endangerment of the health of others by constantly manipulating vulnerable people into unneeded surgeries. Typical victims include the under-educated, people of color, low income and Medicaid populations. (I am a residency director dammit syndrome).
8. Orthotic or Balance Brace mania.9. Employment by an orthopedic group and masquerading as/or the belief that you are equivalent to an orthopedic surgeon
(podiatry Valhalla syndrome is a subset disorder under the new MSD-5).
10. Neurotic writing of checks in the belief that the APMA is not stealing your money and is actually working to advance you and podiatry (Block syndrome).
11. Psychotic attendance at gatherings of similarly afflicted PPSD victims (known as seminars).
12. You proudly suffix your name with a non-functional M.D. degree. Alternatively, a Ph.D degree obtained with minimal requirements.
13. Waiting for Godot Syndrome (belief that you will actually be allowed to take (and/or pass) the USMLE, or in extreme cases, be awarded an MD degree. NOTE: this form of depravity is considered extreme and likely beyond cure.
Fortunately it appears the number of new cases PPSD are declining. Early cases initiated by exposure to podiatry schools are reportedly reduced in number.The diminishing number of future cases is expected to continue. Better education of potential victims and the availability of alternative life decisions are thought to be key factors. Total eradication of PPSD in not likely in the short term.
What makes podiatric medical school great?
They told us about medical texts, Guyton physiology, Robbins pathology, Harrisons Internal Medicine. Once one buys the texts a student or practicing podiatrist can spend years reading them purchasing updated versions etc…
One warning. Sometimes older editions of medical books contain valuable information absent from newer editions so careful before throwing an older edition out

Hey Robert, podiatry is a wonderful profession. For example, where else is a patient with a painful ingrown toenail treated? How many MD’s do you know of treat ingrown toenails?
Furthermore think of all those patients suffering from painful callouses.
As far as being happy, think of how much pain relief a patient has after a podiatrist treated a painful ingrown toenail.

Our podiatric medical schools provided recommendations of texts such as Guyton physiology, pathology texts, and Harrisons Internal Medicine. Thus a podiatrist has access to understanding the systemic and local causes of such conditions such as pedal edema etc… And the need to refer to those licensed to treat such systemic conditions. In some states a podiatrist is not allowed to call themselves a podiatric physician. Other states permit this. Perhaps one can move to a state that allows one to call themselves a podiatric physician. Doing so will possibly increase the anatomic scope of practice. If I told my classmates about this site, I don’t think any of them would believe it because one thing I have noticed about podiatry as a whole, from students to practicing podiatrist is that psychological damage has taken a hold in their lives due to this profession. I feel like I’m dealing with PTSD right now and I’m just a 3rd year student. I can only imagine what that will feel like when 4th year comes around and then the watered down residency programs that I keep hearing about to the low ball salary offers.
