Informal training includes cases that I scrubbed on podiatric cases in the operating room and accumulated an operative log that was overseen by the hospital’s quality assurance program. It involves a letter from the then podiatry chief who stated I recieved training from him etc…. For new procedures there is a path whereby attendings scrub in and learn how to perform such new procedures etc… Informal experience involves performing wound care and having an infectious disease MD observe your competence and document this as a peer reference etc…

It might be difficult to get others to use dermoscopy since there is no procedure code to bill out for. Yet this instrumentation helps provide additional information helpful to make better informed decisions. One problem is that not all dermatologists, podiatrists, general practitioners etc.. routinely use a dermatoscope. However dermatologists I met from Sloan Kettering routinely use dermoscopy.

My opinions are that podiatry schools and podiatry societies should provide a disclaimer that if student loans are taken out the borrower may not be able to pay such loans back.There should be an informed consent educating potential future students of the potential risks of not being able to learn a living even if this results in a lower enrollment in podiatric medical colleges. Perhaps other medical fields cost less to enter, are of shorter duration and have a greater chance for economic success.

Answer to that question depends on the year one entered podiatric medical college. I remember in 1980 I was told that the first 2 years was practically the same as medical school, the last 2 were to learn how to specialize and then to be ready to start ones practice. Insurance plans were different back then and it made sense. For new procedures there is a path whereby attendings scrub in and learn how to perform such new procedures etc…
Informal experience involves performing wound care and having an infectious disease MD observe your competence and document this as a peer reference etc…
It might be difficult to get others to use dermoscopy since there is no procedure code to bill out for. Yet this instrumentation helps provide additional information helpful to make better informed decisions. One problem is that not all dermatologists, podiatrists, general practitioners etc.. routinely use a dermatoscope. However dermatologists I met from Sloan Kettering routinely use dermoscopy.

My opinions are that podiatry schools and podiatry societies should provide a disclaimer that if student loans are taken out the borrower may not be able to pay such loans back.There should be an informed consent educating potential future students of the potential risks of not being able to learn a living even if this results in a lower enrollment in podiatric medical colleges. Perhaps other medical fields cost less to enter, are of shorter duration and have a greater chance for economic success.
Ok, then why be podiatrist?
Answer to that question depends on the year one entered podiatric medical college. I remember in 1980 I was told that the first 2 years was practically the same as medical school, the last 2 were to learn how to specialize and then to be ready to start ones practice. Insurance plans were different back then and it made sense.
