It is my opinion that we all need to help each other during these very difficult times. PAs can serve a valuable service to help people. It does not matter what degree or education one has. It is about experience and training and the person’s ability to help people. Life is short, let us all help people and be proud that we can come together regardless of our degrees.
Times are difficult because the dpm has become a nearly useless anachronistic certificate. It’s not a real degree anyway. Generally, any foot condition can be treated by a podiatrist even if other body areas are affected. This is why the state podiatry board can give advisory opinions. If I get a referral from an MD to treat or give an opinion about a foot condition I inform the patient I am a podiatrist and give my recommendations or treatments. We all share the same goals of attempting to decrease foot pain, suffering etc….

I grew up on a cattle ranch in California and our family veterinarian reminded me that animals were not covered by health insurance. I was a pre-vet major in college. In 1965, there were 13 veterinary schools and 10 optometry schools nationwide. Today, there are over 20 optometry schools and over 30 veterinary schools. I am sure there are a number of optometrists and veterinarians who would love to be a podiatrist if they could be given advanced standing in podiatry school. Just a thought.

The Physician ASSOCIATES ( new name as of last month) will never be at a point of saturation. I lost patients from the family practice group when the hospital bought the Family practice and hired 2 PAs and they treat foot pathology and send foot surgery to the orthopods that also work for the hospital. Drop out podiatrist Herbert said he “grew up on a cattle ranch”. Did he get kicked in the head or something? Uh, He dropped out of podiatry went into law but said he wanted to be a veterinarian. He makes no sense when he says that the number of Optometry and Vet schools have increased since he was in college somehow deducing that Optometrists and Veterinarians WOULD WANT TO BECOME PODIATRISTS IF THEY WERE GIVEN ADVANCED STANDING??!!
