There is a board member of the AAOS who was paid over $2,000,000 in consulting fees from Wright-Stryker.
He happens to be a foot and ankle surgeon. Personally, he has a neutral position with reference to podiatry.
In fact, he would not mind teaching podiatrists at total ankle replacement courses run by Wright-Stryker.
However, there is a slight problem. He has been told that should he dare participate in such training of podiatrists,
his position as a board member will be terminated. There have been other foot and ankle orthopedic surgeons similarly threatened.
In Pittsburgh, foot and ankle orthopedic surgeons such as Steven Conti and Carl Hasselman seem to always find themselves critical of podiatrists and on the plaintiff side of malpractice cases. There are many more such examples.
Those of you that believe the “orthopedic-podiatry” battle is over are mistaken.
Yes, podiatrists have been increasingly employed by orthopedic groups.
Yes, podiatrists have obtained increasing privileges in some university settings.
However, the battle is not over. There are still many anti-podiatry orthopedic surgeons.
Remember, just because the lion is smiling does not mean that it is friendly.

I’m sure there are a lot of people who are happy being a podiatrist. Doing routine care, grinding down thick nails. Making arch supports. Taking an occasional x-Ray. Small office. One or two employees. Low overhead. There definitely is a need for this. HOWEVER, since the undergraduate training has not changed since, you are still this podiatrist. To think that your training equals you to an MD degree takes a lot of balls. So be happy. The next nails you trim might be Robert’s.

Yes podiatrists are employed by orthopedic groups BUT ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE PARTNERS just EMPLOYEES. Orthopods hire many ANCILLARY HEALTH CARE GIVERS. Podiatrists can only do the minor simple elective things the MD is too busy to bother with. The pod truly is a TYPE OF P.A. for the orthopedist, though not as good as one because a P.A. can treat knees, hips shoulders and feet too. Mr. Bijak, you are not 100% correct. It is state dependent. I am a full partner and shareholder in an orthopedic practice. I have the same voting rights, etc, as any other partner in the group and hold shares in the ambulatory surgery center and other ancillary services owned by the practice/corporation. I don’t get the simple cases. Me and another DPM partner in the practice perform 100% of the foot and ankle cases, including trauma. In fact you are less than 12% of the Podiatry Profession. What state are you in because in most states a Podiatrist can not become a “partner” in an LLC or PC.
