There is NOTHING unique about Podiatry. So many healthcare providers out there that can handle foot and ankle care. Problem with Podiatry is the number of years to get a limited license for something others can do makes no sense. If ophthalmologists disappeared tomorrow, the world would know, if Podiatry disappeared tomorrow , no one would notice or care. No one can justify 7 years of podiatry training in an economic environment that is shrinking in reimbursement. Profession has no leadership, guidance or unity.

Podiatry started many years ago as chiropody. Most days were spent cutting corns, calluses and thick nails. Occasionally, you would do a foot mold for ” space shoes” or leather orthotics. No problem. As time went on students who were rejected by medical schools or those who wanted to be more of a “doctor “pushed for changes. They were allowed to write prescriptions, and taught minor foot surgery. All this including chiropody was taught during the 4 years of podiatry “school”. Hospital privileges were given at 3rd rate institutions. Podiatrists had to “co-admit” with an MD.
