My daughter is a PA, she is licensed from head to toe. She does more ortho in the ER ( that includes foot and ankle trauma) then any DPM would be ALLOWED to see. You see, PAs are PART of the medical Community, DPMs are still not and will not be. The stupid comments in PM news about diluting the DPM degree with a PA is ignorant. Let’s compare apples to apples. A board certified MD foot and ankle surgeon is as good with bunions as a foot technician. The difference is that when it comes to serious or complex cases the MD has the edge and more. Podiatrists should be able to do at least one thing as good or better. Never the less the MD wins with training experience and breadth of scope. In the future, there might even be an opportunity I read about for podiatrists to become physician assistants. This would be awesome if podiatrists could obtain this PA degree and treat ankle conditions such as ankle sprains, melanoma in situ located on the ankle, in every state and not worry about getting an ankle permit. All one has to do is to obtain a PA degree and be supervised by a physician. Some PA’s might even be able to assist at ankle surgery. My opinions are in order to treat the ankle in NYS most podiatrists cannot represent themselves as a podiatrist if they want to treat melanoma in situ on the ankle.
