Credits Anyone ?
There is a good market running phony educational sites in Podiatry. Perhaps the word phony is unfair. These are in fact “educational sites” run by individuals, pocketing money from those who attend these meetings. The formula is quite simple. You have a corporation or company pay for a speaker who is in their pocket. Therefore, the speaker cost you nothing. Because the meeting is virtual, there is very little cost other than actually advertising the meeting. The only cost really is advertising. Generally, the advertising is done on PM News so that you can appeal to the lower level of intellectually, impaired podiatrists who are likely to sign up for these programs. The Academy of Continuing Podiatric Medical Education (ACPME) is one example. There is no academy per se. The money goes to two old guys who have been pulling this scam meeting for years. They collect your cash in exchange for providing you with convenient online lectures, with a pathetic array of useless speakers, such as Elliot the Idiot or David the bulldog Nowicki. Plus an assortment of other unaccomplished individuals. Of course McLain and BAKO pseudo dermatologists (dancing Tracy) are giving the usual lectures. Who would actually pay to listen to this array of speakers ? And yet they hold this meeting every several months and people apparently sign up to get the credits. It is unimaginable that anything can be learned. The two old guys running the meeting simply stuff their pockets with really good money likely in the hundred thousand per year. Similarly, LER and Dr. Dubious have been following the same formula. Get money from corporations and companies, let them provide speakers, you collect the registration fee, there is no hard cost other than advertising. Again, amazingly, people sign up to hear the same lectures and topics over and over again. Presents is the paragon example. Historically they pull this off with “corporate sponsors” who are paying the tab for this, but they make residents and you also pay collecting money for something that really is a little cost to them. At least they run an occasional on site meeting where they obtain money from companies for conducting, so-called workshops, basically, a display of how to use their products. IFAF is yet another example in which speakers obtain funding from some corporation, IFAF takes a cut, as do the speakers, and you still get to pay to attend the meeting. Where the hell is CPME on all of this? The answer is nowhere to be found. Apparently, so long as you follow the rules, whatever they are, you are free to do this in Podiatry. What is most pathetic of all is that people actually sign up and pay for these credits. ASPS has recently followed suit with the blessing of the APMA. Slowly, this has now been creeping into ACFAS, can you say lapiplasty? There is no difference in the APMA national or regional meetings. Probably your state meeting is every bit as bad. This is one more reason for future healthcare providers to avoid this profession, and become a PA or NP or go to osteopathic or allopathic medical school. Not only do things not change in Podiatry, they are actually getting worse. It has become clear that you could pull almost any scam you wish without any consequences.

Let us be real here. I graduated in 1997 and did a 2 year residency. I was lucky to buy a practice and did well…for a few years. Then the reimbursements started to drop , paper work increased 3 fold and PAs and NPs started coming out of the wood work doing Podiatry at primary care doctors offices or immediate care centers. Part of emotional honesty, is understanding unfortunate experiences do occur, such as being denied access to podiatric medical training can occur. I agree that a license does not make an MD with no toenail or bunion surgery training competent at bunion surgery. But technically the MD license should open up an opportunity for an MD to learn toenail or bunion surgery etc A license is an opportunity to learn from others how to upgrade ones skill set.
toenail ‘surgery” is a waste for MD intellects. That’s what low level podiatrists are for. There’s noting intellectually difficult about a stupid bunion. It’s mechanical and repetitious. You can take someone with one year community college and let them assist in a number of bunions and they could do it as well as any big rr “certified” foot technicians.
Robert they can only assist because the scope of their license allows them to assist and eventually become surgeon of record. They do not need demonstrate competence to be licensed to both assist as well as eventually treat bunions independently.
Similarly in New Jersey a podiatrist can be licensed to operate independently to treat the ankle, but they also can assist at ankle surgery to eventually become competent an independently performing ankle surgery. It’s called upgrading ones skill set and needing a license to do so.
